Work; Eduction and Community Engagment
The mix of outdoor and indoor environments gives our members a sense of freedom in a relaxed and secure environment. We do not just care for our members, we help them to grow with worthwhile and valued jobs including growing vegetables, fruit, herbs and maintaining the grounds of the garden. There is a tremendous sense of connection with the natural environment and the need to nurture and care of it and each other.
In addition to working within the grounds of the Abbey our members also have the opportunity to work within the local community fulfilling gardening contracts. This provides a real sense of ‘work’ for our members, whilst also increasing our engagement with local residents and businesses.
But how do our members feel about the Walled Garden and the work they do? They have plenty to say about their work in the garden.
“I started working in the garden for one day a week 18 months ago. I love it so much I now come 4 days a week. I work very hard at digging, mowing, raking, planting, drilling, hammering, painting” Heather
